Why We Exist

A few years back, a family member spent nearly $2,400 having a straightforward will and living trust drafted by a local attorney. The documents ran twelve pages. When we compared them line-by-line to a $189 package from a well-known online legal service, more than 90% of the content was functionally identical — same statutory language, same beneficiary structure, same executor provisions. The attorney had done real work, of course. But for a family with modest assets and no unusual circumstances, the extra $2,200 didn't buy meaningfully better protection.

That experience raised an uncomfortable question: if online legal document services can produce genuinely usable estate planning documents for a fraction of the cost, why is it so hard to figure out which one to actually use?

Search "best online will" and you'll find a wall of listicles written by people who clearly never opened an account, never generated a document, and never checked whether the output would be enforceable in the reader's state. Half of them are ranked SEO plays that appear to have picked their "winner" based on affiliate commission rates. The other half are official service comparisons published by the companies themselves.

Nobody was doing the boring, expensive work: buying every service at full retail, generating real documents, comparing output line-by-line, and being honest about what each one actually gets right and wrong.

That's the work we do. That's why Law-Trust.com exists.

What We Do

Law-Trust.com is an independent testing and comparison publication for online legal document services — with a specific focus on estate planning (wills, living trusts, powers of attorney, healthcare directives), plus adjacent categories like small business formation and prenuptial agreements. We serve readers in six English-language jurisdictions: the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, Ireland, and India.

Every service we review goes through the same testing process.

Law-Trust.com is built by a small editorial team who care about getting the details right. Everyone below contributes to the site under our editorial policy; we're a publication first and a comparison directory second.

Our Editorial Standards

Every review we publish has to clear the following five standards. If any of them fail, the review doesn't ship.

   Full-price purchase, never comped access

   We buy every service at retail, including any upsells or premium tiers we're evaluating. If a company offers us complimentary access "for review purposes," we decline. Real documents, real prices, real experience.

   Documented, consistent scoring criteria

   Every service is scored on the same five criteria: document quality, jurisdictional accuracy, ease of use, support quality, and value. Criteria weights are published on our How We Test page and don't change between reviews.

   Affiliate relationships never influence scores

   Our scores are determined before commercial partnerships are evaluated. We disclose every affiliate relationship on individual review pages and in our Affiliate Disclosure. Services we don't have affiliate partnerships with are reviewed on the same criteria as ones we do.

   Quarterly re-testing and public update dates

   Online legal services change their document templates, pricing, and features frequently. We re-test every service in our comparison at least every 90 days and update the "last tested" date at the top of each review. If we can't verify a service is still current, we clearly label the review as pending re-test.

   Corrections are visible, not silent

   If we get something wrong, we correct it visibly. Material corrections are documented at the bottom of the affected page with the date and a brief note. We don't silently rewrite history.
