Fabric is a free, basic will from a life insurance seller, fine for a simple estate and tight budgets. Trust & Will costs more (Will Plan from $199, Trust Plan from $499) but adds state-specific documents and a living trust option. Homeowners and families wanting probate planning should lean toward Trust & Will.
Fabric by Gerber Life is a family finance brand best known for term life insurance. It also runs an online will maker that it describes as free. Fabric says you can create a digital last will and testament in about five minutes.
The business model is simple. The will is the hook. The company's revenue comes from insurance. Fabric's own legal notices say its term policies are issued by Western-Southern Life Assurance Company and distributed by Gerber Life Agency, LLC, which receives compensation for those sales.
None of that makes the will bad. It does mean the product is built around a different goal than a pure estate planning company. For a deeper look at the product itself, read our Fabric by Gerber review.
A will is the core document for most people. Used properly, it lets you:
If you have no will at all, state law decides who inherits. Our guide on what happens if you die without a will explains why even a basic document matters.
We found no living trust product on Fabric's official will page. It describes a will maker. A will, by itself, generally has to go through probate court. A trust is a separate document. If a trust is on your wish list, Fabric's free tool is not the place to build one.
Fabric's public pages did not clearly list every extra document. That includes things like a power of attorney or healthcare directive, and how closely the will adapts to your state's rules. Older third-party reviews describe the will as limited, with few customization options. Treat that as dated. Before relying on it, look at what the tool actually asks you and what it produces.
Yes. Whatever tool you use, a will is valid only if you follow your state's signing rules. Most states require witnesses, and some allow or require notarization for certain steps. Our guide to notarizing a will online covers the practical side. Check your state's rules before you sign.
Expect insurance to appear throughout the Fabric experience. This is the company's main product, and the will tool leads into it. That is not a trick, but it is a sales funnel.
A few practical tips if you use it:
Life insurance can be a smart part of a family plan, especially for parents. How much you need depends on debts, income and dependents. Our guide on how much life insurance you need with a will walks through the thinking. If you later set up a trust, see whether your trust should be the life insurance beneficiary too.
Trust & Will is a paid estate planning platform. Its pricing page, checked in October 2026, lists two main plans:
Trust & Will also lists an optional membership at $49 per year and an optional Attorney Support add-on at $299. Attorney Support gives phone access to an estate planning attorney for one year, and it is not offered in every state.
Trust & Will also says it will connect you with a pre-screened attorney, at no cost to match, for complex needs. It names a child with special needs, estates of $15M or more, a business with three or more employees and blended families with complicated dynamics.
Pricing note: couples pricing and state differences can change what you pay at checkout. Our older Trust & Will review may show different figures than the official page today. Use the official checkout as the final word.
Disclosure: we earn a commission if you buy through our Trust & Will links. It does not change what we say about either service. If a free will is the right answer for you, we say so below.

A will is often enough if your assets are modest, you do not mind your estate going through probate, and your main goal is naming guardians and heirs. That is the case Fabric's free will is built for.
A revocable living trust can help if you own a home or other significant assets, want more privacy, or want to plan for incapacity. Assets placed in the trust can generally pass to beneficiaries without probate. Two cautions:
For the basics, read what a living trust is and our living trust vs will comparison. If you use a trust, a pour-over will acts as a safety net for anything left outside it.

Yes. Fabric's online will maker does not charge for the will itself, and Fabric's own page describes it as a free online will maker. The company earns money by selling term life insurance, issued by Western-Southern Life Assurance Company and distributed by Gerber Life Agency, so expect insurance offers around the will.
We found no living trust product on Fabric's official will page, which describes a will maker. If you want a revocable living trust, you will need a different service. Check Fabric's site for any recent changes.
It depends on your situation. As of October 2026 Trust & Will lists a Will Plan from $199 and a Trust Plan from $499. If you own a home, want to avoid probate, or want a trust, the extra cost may be worth it. If your estate is small and simple, a free will can be a reasonable start.
Fabric describes the will maker as free and says nothing on its will page about requiring a policy. Insurance is offered alongside it, and you can decline. Read each screen before you click so you know what you are agreeing to.
No. A will generally goes through probate court. A properly funded revocable living trust can let assets titled in the trust pass without probate, but rules and thresholds vary by state, and assets left out of the trust may still go through probate.
Not in the base plans. Trust & Will lists Attorney Support as an optional add-on for $299, giving phone access to an estate planning attorney for one year. It is not available in every state, so check the list on its attorney support page.
Yes. You can sign a free will now and replace it later with a more complete plan. When you do, the newer document should expressly revoke older wills. Keep track of which one is current and tell your executor where to find it.
Both let you name a guardian in a will. A free will can cover that basic need. Trust & Will's Will Plan adds state-specific documents and other planning forms, and its Trust Plan adds a trust if you want to control how money reaches your children.
